WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - June 11, 2009 -- Jay Werner, vice president of operations for Blue Rhino, addressed waste management and recycling facilities on delivering a nationwide solution for propane tank disposal at WasteExpo 2009. The Rhino Recycle program, offered by the leader in propane tank exchange, is an economical and ecologically friendly program designed to recycle and refurbish discarded grill tanks at waste disposal and recycling facilities across the country.
“The Rhino Recycle program from Blue Rhino alleviates the need for collection sites to dispose of gas grill propane tanks on their own,” Werner stated during a panel discussion on unique green programs at the show on Monday. “For the past two years, waste management and recycling facilities have been using Rhino Recycle with great success, resulting in the rescue of thousands of tanks from collection sites nationwide.”
Rhino Recycle is an economic and environmentally safe process that takes tanks that would have normally been stored at landfills and recycle centers and refurbishes them, extending the useful product life. This process keeps waste down and minimizes the safety hazards associated with storing tanks at recycle centers and waste disposal sites.
“Many facilities and landfills face a similar situation. Often, people drop off empty, unwanted propane tanks because they don’t know where else to take them,” added Werner. “Recycle and waste disposal organizations do not always have appropriate space for storing discarded propane tanks and they may spend up to $20 per tank to contract companies to pick them up and dispose of them.”
The Rhino Recycle program does have minimum quantity and quality standards for acceptance and a small per tank fee may apply in some circumstances; however, in most cases the program is free, which can result in significant savings to an organization. Rhino Recycle will also be at select mobile household hazardous waste drop-off events in 2009 to accept and appropriately handle unwanted gas grill propane tanks.
“This program is good for the environment and it saves waste disposal and recycling facilities time and money by removing the investment needed for disposing of unwanted tanks independently,” Werner said in closing.
